Statistically, about 1 in 5 Americans experience migraines on a regular basis. The incidence of migraines is lower in other parts of the world, but there is a growing trend in developing countries. Why is that? In part, the foods we consume can to blame.
Studies as far back as the 1970s found that food allergies and/or intolerance played a role in the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Common foods found to be allergenic include milk, wheat, chocolate, oranges and black tea. Migraine suffers are commonly allergic or intolerant to more than one food – often up to three. Of course, food allergies that can trigger or worsen migraines aren’t limited to just these foods previously listed.
Food allergies and intolerances can play a significant role in any health disorder, and is certainly a primary culprit to consider when treating migraines using natural medicine. Eating a healthy diet is certainly helpful, but in many cases food allergy testing is highly recommended.
Both artificial sweeteners and food coloring can also trigger or worsen migraines. Aspartame, also known as NutraSweet and Equal can have profound neurological-based side effects from use. The number one most common side effect of the 1,200 side effects noted by the FDA is migraines. So if you suffer from migraines, then you should avoid Aspartame!
Also, FD&C Yellow #5 known by its chemical name Tartrazine has been found to be a trigger for migraines. It is used in both foods and personal care products including tooth paste and shampoo. It is best to avoid any product that contains FD&C Yellow #5, which is used solely to improve the appearance of food and personal care products.
More commonly recognized, studies have shown that specific class of foods containing tyramines may serve as a trigger for migraines. These include alcoholic beverages, fried, fatty foods, and meat (especially pork and seafood). Tyramine-rich foods are thought to lead to swelling of the blood vessels in the brain and may cause migraines.
The foods highest in tyramines include:
• Chocolate
• Cocoa
• All Aged Cheeses
• Avocados
• Fermented Sausage (bologna, salami, pepperoni, hot dogs)
• Red Wine
• Fava Beans
• Pickled Herring
• Bananas
• Canned Figs
• Beer
• Chicken Livers
• Anchovies
• Dried Fish
• Yeast Extracts
I recommend avoiding these foods, along with the elimination of both Aspartame and artificial food coloring in general, and Yellow #5 specifically. Eating healthy, whole foods is also highly recommended.
