Now offering Kinesio Tape!

This is a cotton tape that attempts to release muscular and fascial adhesions that occurs of previous trauma, inflammation and poor posture over time.

Kinesio Tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase and has been used since 1979. This tape has been used in Japan on professional athletes far 25 years.

The main goal when using Kinesio tape is to restore normal function to affected areas by accomplishing proprieceptive feedback. Proprieception involves the balancing mechanisms in the body with its gross diameter being standing, the operation of torso, hips, knees, ankles, shoulders and even the head. Importantly other operations incorporate many smaller muscle movements such as finger movement and even leaning forward or backward. The taping also reduces edema and aids in regulating lymphatic congestion. This is achieved by acting as a second skin, lifting the skin, allowing drainage of extra fluid; acts like a massage.

An interesting effect of friction massage is the creation of anesthesia. The gate theory of pain model indicates that stimulation of the large-fiber mechanoreceptors causes presynaptic inhibition at the spinal cord preventing the small-diameter fibers from reaching the consciousness (within 3 minutes of friction anesthesia begins). The more times this anesthesia occurs the less time it takes to produce the same effects. However this doesn’t seem to occur on severely inflamed tissues.

The tape helps contracted muscles relax but diminishing the work that the muscle has to work. It also helps weakened muscles “turn on” to help them work how they are suppose to work, restoring the natural ability of the body to do its normal function (again referring to balance). To enhance muscle contraction, the tape is applied origin to insertion of that muscle, and conversely, to diminish muscle contraction it is applied insertion to origin.

Kinesio Tape is a functional tape that helps increase motion in inhibited areas while acting as a brace to support the injured area.

Overuse conditions respond within 2 weeks to 2 months under rigorous treatment of 3 times a week.

Exercising and stretching for awareness of correct posture and function are also incorporated to “reeducate” parts involved.

Tui Na Massage
is an ancient, highly effective form of massage. Over 4000 years old, it is one of the healing arts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with acupuncture, Qigong and herbal medicine. Tui Na translates to “push-grasp” and tends to be quite vigorous in nature. It is extremely effective in relieving pain because it works not only the muscles and joints but also affects the flow of vital life energy, or Qi, in the body.
In Chinese theory, Qi flows in channels called meridians and supplies energy to all the organs, body tissues and the mind. In a Tui Na treatment, pressure is applied to these meridians and specific points on them to balance the flow of Qi and address the underlying energy problems in the body. Tui Na is particularly successful in treating pain of muscles and joints from sports injury, wear and tear, chronic stress, or stress related disorders.
In China, Tui Na treats conditions that in the West would require an osteopath, chiropractor, physiotherapist, or sports therapist. In this way it is both versatile and specific. Overall, Tui Na relaxes muscles and balances the flow of Qi in the body. In doing this, it boosts the vitality and well-being of the body, automatically improving the immune system and general health of the client.

Vitamin D is produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Lack of sunlight (harmful to us in other ways) means lack of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is being found to be a very important vitamin for immune health, bone health, inflammation response and mood. And at our latitude, it is being found to be quite deficient. I have been curious to hear more and more clients say that their MD is recommending a vitamin D lab test, and my nurse midwife told me to take vitamin D daily.

We usually recommend 4,000 IU daily.
This is WAY more than is in your multivitamin, so we recommend a separate vitamin supplement. We carry a great liquid vitamin D that requires you to take just 4 drops per day.
By the way, the Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin D, currently set at 200-600 IU, is now under review.
It’s clearly important to get vitamin D in the dark winter, but my nurse recommended to take it year round, as at this latitude we don’t get enough even in the summer!
Kids need vitamin D too! Dose by weight, so if your child is half the size of an adult, give them half the dose.

Hormone imbalance getting you down?

Do you suffer from PMS, menstrual cramps, infertility, increased facial hair growth, or irregular periods? These are all sign of hormone imbalance in women.

How about Foggy thinking, irritability, weight gain, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia or memory lapses- any of these symptoms of hormone imbalance sound familiar? Navigating your way through peri menopause can be tricky, unless you have an expert on your side. And lets not forget the men:decreased urine flow, erectile dysfunction, abdominal fat, prostate problems or decrease stamina? These symptoms of andropause can be improved with the right lifestyle changes and hormone balance.

Many of my patients tell me they have been assuming they just need to live with symptoms like these. But, really, they don’t and neither do you. The key to regaining balance in your life and with your health is knowing that hormones work together with a healthy body and a healthy mind. Here are a few things you can do to get started:

Determine what symptoms you have, and identify any hormone imbalance with your doctor or through testing.

If your hormones are low or imbalanced, supplement with things that mimic your bodies natural hormones (like bio identical hormones or herbs)

Balance your digestion with your diet

Start exercising, and if you don’t have the energy, go back to step two

Stop smoking ASAP

Reduce exposure to hormones in your food, water and cosmetics

SLEEP! And if you can’t sleep, go back to step two.

Find ways to laugh and enjoy life

It’s cold and flu season again. Here are a The top 5 things you can do to reduce your chance of catching one, or help you get better quicker once you do.

GARGLE with salt water- throughout the day- do this when you are exposed to colds and flus and to shorten the course once your sick. The viruses replicate in our throats, if you can wash them away, they have less chance to take hold and multiply. If you can’t gargle at work or while your out- drink hot tea.

Elderberry- this herb is not only delicious, but has been shown to shorten the duration of colds and flus as well as the popular drug tamiflu.

Zinc- like elderberry can shorten the course of the illness and help boost your immune system to prevent getting it- be sure to eat when you take it- zinc can cause nausea is you take it on a empty stomach

Chicken soup- weather its the comfort or something in it, studies show that eating chicken soup actually does shorten the course of a virus and boost your immunity. one mechanism is thought to be by strengthening gut immunity.

Herbal tincture formulated for your specific symptoms- there are so many herb out there that can be used to boost immunity and help with sinus congestion, cough, sore throat. Talk to your Naturopath about formulating an herbal formula just for you.

Stay hydrated…you know you’re supposed to.
While you are out there enjoying the fabulous summer weather, its important to remember that along with sun and warmth comes a greater need for water. Our bodies are 60-70% water and sweating is our bodies natural cooling mechanism. So when we heat up, we sweat more to cool down.
Sweat is made up of water plus electrolytes ( sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium etc).
All that sweating can greatly reduce the amount water and electrolytes available for the body to function optimally. Without enough water we risk over heating, “sun stroke”, dehydration, and less urgent symptoms like foggy thinking, moodiness, joint pain and muscle cramping. On a typical day we need about 1/2 our body weight in ounces of water daily- for example a 150 pound person would need 75 ounces of water daily. On a hot day add at least 16 ounces more to that plus electrolytes.
That’s a lot of water! Try it out, you’ll find you experience other health benefits as well, like weight loss, more energy, better immune function, healthier skin and normal bowel function. Start slowly, gradually increasing your daily water intake to these levels. Your body can only absorb about 1/4 cup of water every 15 minutes. In the summer when your losing water through sweat, you’ll also be losing electrolytes. Be sure to add some electrolytes rich beverages to the mix. If you can’t make it the store for a sports drink, or are interested in a healthier version here is an electrolyte replacement recipe you might try:
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 Tbs sugar/maple syrup OR 2 tsp honey
1 c apple juice
3 c water
lemon juice to taste
Enjoy your summer and stay hydrated!

Calcium supplements are the fourth most consumed supplement in the United States. The current recommendation is 1200mg per day; this is equal to about 4 glasses of milk per day. But where did this number come from? How was it decided that everyone needed to be taking in so much calcium? There was a study done in 1986 that demonstrated that taking 1200mg of supplemental calcium did indeed increase bone density. This bit of news was taken up by the media and supplement companies and voila- a new recommendation to help promote dense bones. Unfortunately it took 10 years before someone asked the question of whether or not taking that much calcium decreased fractures. A 12 year study in 1997 that followed 77,000 women showed that women who drink 2 or more glasses of milk are actually almost 50 percent higher risk of fracture than those who don’t drink milk.
It turns out that while supplemental calcium may increase bone density some, it also makes bones more brittle. The highly promoted idea that milk builds “strong bones” refers to the prevention of osteoporosis. We’ve been lead to believe that drinking milk and eating dairy products is the best way to do this. In fact, the opposite seems to be true. A balanced intake of minerals cannot occur when the diet emphasizes dairy. Dairy’s high calcium content causes relative deficiencies in magnesium and other bone-building minerals, and its high phosphorus content reduces calcium availability. Healthy bones come from a balanced intake of all the bone minerals, including calcium from food, exercise (especially weight lifting) and vitamin D. Here are some great foods and their calcium content.
Sesame seeds (1 cup = 702 mg)
Flax seeds (1 cup = 416 mg)
Cabbage (1 cup = 380 mg)
Sardines 3 oz(in oil, with bones=324 mg)
Collard greens (1 cup = 266 mg)
Spinach (1 cup = 245 mg)
Orange (1 cup = 104 mg)
Kale (1 cup = 94 mg) by Shannon Weeks, ND

Developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, Polarity Therapy is a healing art that restores the flow of vital energy to a relaxed and energized balance by tapping into the electromagnetic currents of the body. A soft, stimulating, or deep touch is used to connect positive and negative charges in the body, in a way similar to a pair of jumper cables, to break up blockages and to create a state of balance. Based on multiple ancient healing systems, including Ayurveda and the chakra system, Polarity Therapy considers the whole body and mind in restoring health. Specific treatments are developed to treat whiplash, back problems, sports injuries, digestive problems, and general stress.

Craniosacral Therapy is a method of releasing blockages where Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) is confined or immobilized to restore the overall fluid rhythm of the body. This gentle, hands on approach offers a way of tapping into the body’s own healing forces. Through increasing both the production and movement of fluid, we facilitate the body’s own self-corrective mechanisms. This form of therapy is generally deeply relaxing as well as rejuvenating as it directly improves the function and support of the central nervous system. It can also be helpful in relieving pain as it facilitates realignment from the core outward. Craniosacral Therapy has been known to alleviate a wide range of conditions, including:

Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries

migraine headaches

chronic fatigue

chronic neck and back pain

central nervous system disorders

temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)

stress and tension-related problems

learning disabilities

post-traumatic stress disorder

sleep disorders

While the focus of Craniosacral Therapy is to uncover the source of the problem, the overall effect of a typical treatment is deep relaxation, and in this state the body simply functions better. Profound relaxation nourishes the central nervous system, builds the strength of the immune system and allows the body to access its own restorative powers. In this way, the shifts during a session can be profound and immediately felt or perhaps more subtly sensed overtime as the body fully integrates the changes. Craniosacral Therapy both augments other forms of treatment and offers a boost to the overall well being of the individual on its own.
